Ski Touring and Avalanche Equipment

↳ Roller Skis

The first ski tours were already made at the end of the 19th century - for the reason that there were simply no ski lifts at that time. A lot has happened in the ski touring world since then. Today, the popular winter sport is practiced by more athletes than ever before - despite the numerous ski lifts nowadays.

SKI TOURING EQUIPMENT
Tourers also use equipment used in classic mountaineering (such as ice ax etc.).
Ski boots (ski boots) in lightweight construction with joints and tread soles make walking easier, even on steep or rocky terrain, because the skis sometimes have to be carried. The binding must be adapted to the increased friction. Such shoes are only suitable for touring bindings. Normal ski bindings do not offer any safety with these shoes (lack of controlled release values).
The skis should have ski stoppers. Lashing straps prevent the skis from disappearing in deep snow or sliding down the slope in the event of a fall, but they imply a risk of injury on fast descents. In the event of an avalanche, they can make it more difficult to loosen the skis and thus prevent the avalanche victim from "swimming" on the surface of the snow masses.

Avalanche beacons (Search device)
Avalanche beachons with 3-antenna technology are state of the art and offer clear advantages in the search. Furthermore, make sure that batteries are used that the manufacturer recommends and that these are removed from the device at the end of the season in order to prevent the batteries in the device from leaking.
Regardless of which model you prefer: You have to practice using your own device again and again, preferably before, but also during the winter season! In an emergency, it is essential to know exactly how it works and the device-specific characteristics in order to use the device efficiently.
There is a large number of avalanche transceiver devices on the market, with almost every manufacturer offering so-called basic devices and devices with additional functions. Which device you ultimately decide on depends on your own wishes and ideas. In any case, it is advisable to seek advice from our professionals. The software updates should always be carried out on updatable LVS devices. Information can be found on the manufacturer's homepage.

Shovel
Without an avalanche shovel, even the best avalanche transceiver is of no use, as we cannot save the casualty with our bare hands. With the avalanche shovel, the focus is not on the lowest weight, but on robustness, a long handle (telescopic handle) and a large shovel blade.
We recommend metal shovels: These are a little heavier than those made of plastic, but much more stable.

Probe
The avalanche probe forms an inseparable unit with the avalanche transceiver and shovel. Only the interaction of all three rescue devices prevents loss of time. The probe enables precise localization of the buried subject and serves as an orientation aid when digging. A good probe - at least 240 cm long - is stable, can be assembled quickly and has a good clamping mechanism.

Recommendation: Avalanche airbag system
Since airbag systems are the only emergency equipment that can prevent a complete avalanche burial (no visible features on the surface when the avalanche stops), it is recommended that you take such a system with you. With a pull on the deployment handle, either one or two airbag balloons are inflated in seconds, depending on the model.
Following the physical principle of segregation ("inverse segregation"), most of the parts come to lie on the surface. Under no circumstances should an airbag system be misused as a license for carefree and risky driving on avalanche-prone slopes.
